How to Add LED Lighting to Slat Wall Panels
Add LED lighting to slat wall panels by choosing a compatible kit, marking the light positions and planning cable routes before fixing the panels. Keep the driver accessible, test the complete kit according to its instructions, then fit the panels and lights using the specified method. A little planning makes the light lines look intentional and keeps connections accessible later.
Choose the lighting effect first
Two balanced lines can frame a television or headboard; a few evenly spaced strips can give a larger wall a stronger rhythm. Mark the proposed positions with masking tape and view them from the sofa, bed or doorway. Check that shelves, furniture and the television will not hide the lights or create distracting reflections.
Warm white often complements Walnut and Dark Oak, while cooler white can suit Grey, Black Oak and pale finishes. Compare the light with a real panel sample in the room. Dimming changes brightness; it does not necessarily change the colour temperature. Check what the chosen kit actually offers before ordering.

Plan and fit the wall in six stages
- Measure the panel layout. Measure the usable width and height, then mark panel edges, sockets, switches and any openings. Check the actual panel dimensions and slat spacing. Use the panel calculator for an initial panel quantity, allowing for the cuts required by your layout.
- Mark the light positions. Place the tape lines in the intended slat gaps. Judge the spacing across the complete feature wall, including corners and panel joins. A full-height panel does not automatically need a light in every gap.
- Plan the cables and driver. Check that the supplied leads reach the intended driver position without pulling or being trapped behind a panel. Keep the driver accessible and provide the ventilation its instructions require. Plan television power, aerial, data and HDMI routes at the same stage.
- Check and test the kit. Inspect the supplied parts and read the instructions for the exact model. Test the complete kit as directed before committing to the final fixing. Check the remote, brightness and appearance against the selected panel finish. Stop if parts are missing, damaged or incompatible.
- Fit using the specified method. Follow both the panel and lighting instructions. Use straight reference lines and fixings appropriate to the wall. Disconnect the kit from power before handling or adjusting components. Cut a strip only where and how its instructions permit; being described as cuttable does not mean it can be cut anywhere.
- Check before closing the wall. Retest the lighting according to the kit instructions while connections remain accessible. Confirm that no cable is pinched and that the finished arrangement allows future access to the driver and controls.
When to involve an electrician
Use a qualified electrician for a new socket, concealed mains wiring or changes to fixed electrical wiring. A plug-in kit still needs its own installation instructions. Do not substitute a power supply or combine components simply because the connectors appear to fit. If the supplied instructions do not explain a proposed cut, connection or fixing, confirm it before proceeding.
Common planning questions
Can lights be added after the panels are fitted?
Possibly, if the panel gaps, cable route and driver access allow it. Check those points before removing panels or cutting. Planning before installation usually avoids extra work.
Will one kit fit every slat-panel range?
No. Panel profiles and gaps vary. Check the exact panel and kit together, especially when using wide-slat or flexible panels. A similar appearance does not establish compatibility.
