How to Fit Acoustic Wall Panels
A good installation begins before the first panel reaches the wall. Measure carefully, check the finish in the room and plan where every full panel and cut edge will sit. This guide explains the normal stages for decorative acoustic wall panels. Always follow the instructions supplied with your chosen product and use a competent installer where electrical sockets, uneven walls or complex cuts are involved.
1. Measure and plan the layout
Measure the usable wall width and height in several places because walls and ceilings are not always perfectly square. Note sockets, switches, radiators, skirting, coving, doors and corners. Lay the panels out before applying adhesive so the final narrow cut does not end up in the most visible part of the room.
For a symmetrical feature wall, it can look better to balance cut panels at both ends. If the room has a television or fireplace, mark its centre line first and plan the panel joints around it.
2. Prepare the wall
The surface should be dry, clean, stable and free from loose paint, dust, grease or failing wallpaper. Repair obvious damage and remove anything that would prevent the panel from sitting flat. Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling or cutting. Newly plastered or damp walls need to be fully ready for the chosen fixing method.
3. Check the panels and tools
Open and inspect the panels before installation. Compare colour and grain in the room lighting and arrange the panels in the order you want them fitted. Typical tools may include a tape measure, pencil, level, suitable saw, straight edge, protective equipment and a manufacturer-approved grab adhesive. Screws may also be appropriate where a removable or particularly secure fixing is required.
4. Cut and trial fit
Measure twice and cut once. Support the panel while cutting and use the correct blade for its face, MDF slats and acoustic backing. Trial fit every cut panel before applying adhesive. Openings around sockets should be measured precisely and electrical work should be completed safely by a qualified person where required.
5. Fix the panels
Apply the selected adhesive in accordance with its instructions, including coverage, bead pattern and curing time. Keep the first panel level because it controls the alignment of the entire wall. Press each panel firmly into position and check the slats remain vertical or horizontal as planned. Do not rely on adhesive that is unsuitable for the wall surface or panel weight.
6. Finish the edges
Plan visible edges before installation. Depending on the product and room, an edge can finish against a return wall, trim or carefully cut panel. Refit sockets and fittings only when it is safe to do so. Remove installation dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment and avoid soaking the acoustic backing.
